Can a Beginner start on a shortboard?

I am just learning to surf and i was wondering if i could just skip learning on a longboard and go straight to a shortboard? I know all the basics already and think i'm fairly fit, if that helps at all.

BTW, does it help in the long run to learn on a shortboard rather than on a longboard? Can a Beginner start on a shortboard?
Sure the ancient Hawaiians used to give there kids gnarly little boards to start out on. As long as you're determined whatever you start on you'll do fine ;)Can a Beginner start on a shortboard?
I always recommend starting on a longboard. Whether you buy or rent a longboard doesn't matter. But it is in your best interest to start on a longboard.
