Suggestions of color for a beginner's watercolor palette?

Not sure which colours to buy, or the names of paint. Planning to buy tomorrow.

I am looking to buy about 6 watercolors?

I don't have enough budget to go for artists' quality.

Also,

Have you ever used Winsor and Newton Cotman watercolor and do you recommend them?

ThanksSuggestions of color for a beginner's watercolor palette?
Yes have used them and like them. Are you buying tubes or pans? Hmmmm. you will want the primary colors, plus a couple more. Cadmium red (or hue) Cadmium Yellow (or hue) Alizarin Crimson, Ultramarine or Cobalt blue, Lemon Yellow, yellow ochre, burnt umber and burnt sienna, possibly a black, but I stay away from black. Instead of using white, use more water tomake the color lighter. Use the white of the paper for true whites. You can save the white of the paper by using a masking fluid (frisket). Red and yellow make orange, yellow and blue make green and red and blue make violet. You might want to invest in a nice bright violet, however, as it is difficult to make a beautiful purple with the colors listed above. Depending upon what kind of red, yellow or blue you get, the colors will be different. Use complementary colors to mix browns and neutral colors. (they sit across the color wheel from each other). The siennas and ochres will give yo beatiful browns. Use the burnt umber plus a blue in place of black...it is richerSuggestions of color for a beginner's watercolor palette?
Go for the Winsor and Newton. Good brand, real vibrant colors and true pigments that do not fade.

If I had to pick just 6 colors I'd go for any color I like but I would include:

Paynes grey (must have)

Allizarin Crimson

Cobalt blue

any bright yellow you like Lemon or Cadmium

Some earth tone like Burnt umber or Sienna

NOT black. You should not use black unless you really reall REALLY are sure you need it.

But just get the Cotman starter set It is balanced and you can 'treat' yourself to a new tube once in a while and get a nice collection over time. Most tubes will last you over a year depending on how productive you will be. (some I have are over 5 years old even though I use them regularly)...
