Tips for teaching an 11 year COMPLETE beginner how to swim?

she is a complete beginner, and panics in water. she has been ok on her back but hates doing front crawl. any tips for getting her relaxed? and comfortable on her front, or i general? Also she seems to find it hard to kick her legs in the water - any tips for moving her arms and legs better or faster? Thanks, much appreciated.Tips for teaching an 11 year COMPLETE beginner how to swim?
Hi Tara,

It would be good to know how old she is. But here are some general tips. Keep her in shallow water. Even the steps are good. Your main task is to get her face in the water. Start with chin, cheeks, lips, ears, nose, forehead, etc. Even if she can only do it for one second, praise her and work up to more. The goal is to get her to be able to put her face in the water for at least five seconds. Another trick is to pour water over her head (with her permission of course). Try to make it a game and goofy so she laughs and has fun.

Encourage her to wear goggles or a mask. If they can keep their eyes open it helps decrease the fear.

When her face is in the water, have her practice in different places; holding on to you, the wall, kickboards, noodles, etc. She can practice the kick on her back, sitting on the steps, sitting on the side, holding a noodle, etc.

I wouldn't worry about freestyle yet. When she can get her face in the water and go underwater, then work on breathing drills. Ask if you need more info.Tips for teaching an 11 year COMPLETE beginner how to swim?
You should always encourage her to keep trying . Swimming is not as easy as it seems but it is fun . Make sure you keep it fun . Remind her to blow bubbles (that is very important for beginners).
