What rifle that's above a .22 caliber would be good for a beginner?

I'm not ready for anything too big and too powerful but bigger than a .22. What do you suggest? What rifle that's above a .22 caliber would be good for a beginner?
For target shooting or for varmints you can move up to 223;not much recoil, but effective on ground squirrels and even coyote out to 300-400 yards. If you were thinking more on the lines of deer hunting/target then the 243 or 7mm-08 would be good choices. the 243 is a threshold varmint/ deer cartridge, depending on bullet weight. The 7mm-08 is the better deer choice.

My now 12 year old son learned to shoot with a 223,then 243, and has shot my 30-06 with reduced recoil ammo. I bought my first 30-06 when I was 14, and though the recoil is pretty stout with a full hunting load, it is quite manageable--but that is with good training and not developing bad habits likes flinching.

Find a singe shot H%26amp;R / NEF in 223,243,7mm-08 for about $225 (or less), put a inexpensive scope on it and have at it. If you wanted a bolt action, a Marlin XL 7 normally goes for less than $300.What rifle that's above a .22 caliber would be good for a beginner?
in rifles?

A rifle in a pistol caliber: Marlin Lever Action in 357 magnum ( a real pussycat in a rifle) Beretta Cx4 Storm carbine in 9mm or 40SW.

A rifle in 22 hornet (a real soft shooting gun, great for small game and varmints, but not all that common)

A rifle in 223 winchester (most recoil, but still pretty light. Most versatile)
Are you just target practicing or planning to hunt? If you are just learning, I would stick with the .22 until you are shooting consistantly. The reason is the price of .22's compared with larger ammo. Once you're shooting a decent pattern and you're comfortable, then think about a .223 or maybe a .243.

My personal favorite of all my rifles is a .357 lever action that also shoots .38's.
Depends on what you're going to use it for- if you want a big game rifle you are going to have to have something reasonably powered- if you just want something for casual target practice almost any .22 centerfire is a good choice.
My first rifle was a mosin. I got the 10/22 afterwards. But if your not good with heavy recoil get a mini-14 or some other intermediate caliber rifle. I would tell you to get a 5.56 ar or an ak-74 but you need a bit of money to get one of those.
.22 magnum, .17 Remington Fireball, .22-250, .204 Ruger, .222 Remington [yes .222 not .223], .223 Remington, .243 Winchester, .25-06 Remington, and the biggest I recommend for you is .270 Winchester.
AR-15.

It's .223 caliber (5.56 mm), not difficult to shoot, find, or purchase ammo/parts for. Not to mention it looks pretty cool as well.
a 243 or a 30-30. really if you think about it, if you are deer hunting and you are using a bigger gun the adrenaline will take your mind off of the gun..
Savage Model 25 thumbhole is the only .223 bolt gun you will ever need (though alot of people like the 700s) . They are even more accurate than the bonafied Remington 700.
if your gonna use it as a varmint gun - 223, 22-250

if its gonna double as a deer gun - 243, 7mm-08, 308
A .223 or .243
8 gauge shotgun.
