Which would be easier for a beginner to raise, bettas or goldfish?

Easier for a beginner to raise? Well it all depends on the personality of the owner.

Goldfish grow bigger, which may appeal to you, and they are gentler and are happy to live with other fish. However, they require at least a 20G tank for one fish, and an additional 10G for each fish you add. They also need powerful filters as they produce alot of waste. There are many types of goldfish which gives you quite a bit of choice. Comet and Common Goldfish grow to about 12';, while Fantails, Ryukins, and Orandas grow to 6';. Fantail Goldfish are very interesting and can tolerate alot of neglect, nevertheless, they should be treated the same as any other fish. Besides the types of Goldfish I've listed, there are also types of Goldfish you wouldn't even consider to be Goldfish! Such as Black Moors, Shubunkins, and Lionheads. A good pro to these fish are that they do not require a heater, as they are coldwater fish.

Bettas are tropical fish, so they need a heater. They can live in smaller tanks, about a 5G for one betta is ideal. These fish have brilliant colors of blues, purples and yellows, which makes them nice to watch. But I find that they don't do as much...they just sit around and don't swim as much as goldfish. These fish should also stay alone as they often fight...however sometimes you can keep males and females together. Bettas need to eat bloodworms and other creatures...They will not do as well if they just eat pellet food. Goldfish can live off of just Goldfish food...they do no need any live food. Bettas don't need a filter, but it's recommended. They should also have more hiding places and a bubbler system, as they need lots of oxygen.

Many people think bettas are easier to care for than goldfish because they can live in a smaller tank, but I'd recommend goldfish because there are tons to choose from, they can tolerate more, and they are funner to watch. However, choosing between two kinds of fish is no fun, instead of bettas or goldfish, you could also consider neon tetras, guppies, cichlids, plecos, or even snails. Whatever you do though, do not get a koi unless you plan on investing in an outdoor pond. Choose carefully though and do your research - remember that these are living creatures and deserve to be treated with proper, humane care.Which would be easier for a beginner to raise, bettas or goldfish?
I would say Bettas, because they have fewer requirements than Goldfish, especially when it comes to space.

I have bred bettas before in a 5 gallon aquarium. You need to make sure that the water is clean and free from surface agitation (so no bubbles or power filters). Sponge filters work best. Or you can take filters out alltogether.

When conditions are good for them to breed, the male will make a ';nest'; of foamy bubbles at the surface somewhere. After he mates with the female, she'll lay eggs in the nest. What you need to remember (that I forgot) is to REMOVE the female after she lays eggs. The male will guard the eggs from everything, including the female, who will try to eat them. At best, the male will beat up on the female and possibly kill her. At worst, she will succeed in eating all her eggs. So just take her out of the tank and put her in a separate one.

I did manage to get ONE egg to hatch successfully, despite the fact that I left the female in the tank. But I could have had dozens hatch if I had removed her. So my breeding attempt was technically successful, if imperfect.

Goldfish breeding is a lot more complicated. They have a lot more offspring, and culling is more important. You also need to pay a lot more attention to water conditions. The site below goes into a lot more detail.

I'm going to go with a Betta because I have never been able to keep a goldfish alive. :-) Actually, Bettas can be pretty easy... they can live in something as small as a 2.5 gallon, just put in a filter, heater and do routine partial water changes. And if you forget to feed it one day it will be fine. Goldfish get BIG and are big waste producers so they require more attention to water quality. Have some peas and bigger tanks on hand. Pond would probably be better. :-)
well bettas need a month well water but they have nicne colour but goldfish are not nicnes fish +o(
bettas, because goldfish need at least 20G, and a filter
